He was first made playable in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. His first appearance was in Sonic 2 for the Game Gear, where he was kidnapped by Doctor Robotnik for a "hefty" ransom. Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the main artist and zone designer for Sega's Sonic Team, designed Tails for an internal competition for a sidekick to Sonic. He can use his tails to propel himself into the air like a helicopter for a limited time. Miles Prower, better known by his nickname, Tails, is a two-tailed fox who is Sonic's best friend and sidekick. Main article: Tails ( Sonic the Hedgehog) The Sonic games keep a separate continuity from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics and other Sonic media and, as a result, feature a distinct yet overlapping array of many characters. The series features three fictional species, in order of appearance: Chao, which have usually functioned as digital pets and minor gameplay and plot elements Wisps, which have been used as power-ups and Koco, which when collected grant new abilities for Sonic, among other things. These have ranged from anthropomorphic animal characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit to robots created by Eggman such as Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, as well as human characters such as Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The series has introduced dozens of additional recurring characters over the years. All five of these have remained major characters and appeared in dozens of games. Sonic 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic's rival and later, friend. Sonic CD introduced Amy Rose, a female hedgehog with a persistent crush on Sonic. The sequel, Sonic 2, gave Sonic a fox friend named Tails. The Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise began in 1991 with the game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, which pitted a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic against a rotund male human villain named Doctor Eggman (or Doctor Ivo Robotnik). Clockwise from top: Doctor Eggman, Rouge the Bat, Shadow the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Miles "Tails" Prower, Cream the Rabbit, Cheese the Chao (flying, center), and Blaze the Cat. Scratch has a job as the Concierge, while Grounder appears to be a chef.A variety of Sonic characters gathered. Scratch and Grounder, along with Coconuts, return to the Archie Comic in issue 187 as employees in Mammoth Mogul's newly renovated Casino Night Zone. Grounder appears (without Scratch) in the story "Sonic Spin City!", published in Sonic Super Special #15. Later in the same issue, Scratch appears (without Grounder) in Tails' Little Tale. However, they (along with Coconuts) appear in issue #4. Subsequent appearances of the two were minor. However, the characters themselves were prominently featured in their first appearance there, published in issue #2. Scratch and Grounder also appeared in the earliest issues of the Sonic comic book published by Archie Comics. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which was a stylized clone of Puyo Puyo. Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts all appeared as opponents in the game Dr. While Scratch seems to be the brains, Grounder is the artillery - his robot body is filled with accessories, which switch usually in his drill hands. He is notably less intelligent than Scratch, but once acquired a chip that made him super-intelligent - it was subsequently lost. Grounder's design was purposefully derived from the Grounder from Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Aquatic Ruin Zone, though those Grounders (named "Handrill" in Japan) were mass produced, their color schemes were different, and they attacked by bursting out of walls. Grounder is a small teal swiss army knife-like robot with tank tracks, gauge for his navel and a plate that reads "X-14" on his back, as well as drills instead of his hands and nose. Robotnik shouts back "I didn't forget to pull that lever! I'm not supposed to pull that lever!" and the result was Grounder, who had "slight modifications". While being created by Robotnik in the cartoon, Scratch had his feather plucked and put into a cloner, but Scratch pulled another lever while it was cloning proclaiming "You forgot to pull this one!". Grounder is a sort of "clone" of Scratch. He and Scratch were often seen as the idiotic guinea pigs in the Sonic Sez segments which appeared at the end of each episode, where they were shown to be drinking alcohol, smoking, and vandalizing amongst other notable things. These repeated failures frequently result in the hapless robot receiving a lot of abuse (both verbal and physical) from Robotnik or even Scratch sometimes. Not only this, but he was also highly gullible, easily being deceived by Sonic no matter how bizarre his disguises are. Grounder was a largely comic relief character, and though charged with the capture of Sonic and his friend Tails, he almost always failed.
